Born in Michigan but raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dr. Van Ermen received degrees in Biology and Chemistry from the University of South Dakota. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended dental school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Lincoln. During his time in dental school Dr. Van Ermen developed a passion for oral surgery through volunteering at multiple free clinics for the community. He graduated in May 2020 with distinction, receiving both the dental school awards from the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
After dental school, Dr. Van Ermen completed a yearlong surgical internship at the University of Indiana Health. He then matched into their four-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program. During his residency he functioned as a chief resident at three adult and two pediatric level one trauma centers. During his training obtained a wide breadth of surgical experience, rotating through the ICU, trauma service, plastic surgery, head and neck oncology, anesthesia, and facial plastics. In addition, he spent time in focused implant clinics working in tandem with the prosthodontic residency on complex cases requiring advanced bone grafting and reconstruction.
Dr. Van Ermen’s surgical interests include dentoalveolar, dental and zygomatic implants, bone grafting, as well as outpatient anesthesia. He loves collaborating with providers to develop the best solutions for their patients. Given that his passion for oral surgery started in Nebraska, Dr. Van Ermen is eager to return to “the good life” and cannot wait to give back to the community that was integral to his development.
Outside of work Dr. Van Ermen is an avid golfer, enjoys running trails, reading, and spending time with family, friends, and his chocolate lab, Ace.
